Rock Lyrics Vol. 22 – Pop Goes The World

Rock Lyrics Vol. 22 – Pop Goes The World

This is being written on March 20th 2019, which has been widely proclaimed as International Happiness Day. I don’t know anything about the validity of this proclamation, but let’s roll with it.

It’s a little known fact that this song, Pop Goes The World, is in the  Guinness Book of World Records as the “Happiest video in the known universe”, so it seems appropriate to use it on this auspicious day.

Something that surprised me; Men Without Hats is a Canadian band. I always thought they were Australian! I don’t know when or where I ever got that idea in my head. Learn something new every day.

In reviewing the lyrics, I’m not quite sure that this song is about happiness. Some of the words seem quite dark to me. But the music is uplifting! It’s one of those tunes that makes you jump up and move to the groove. During a concert in Boston (June 2015 – boy, they must be old like me!) the lead singer Ivan Doroschuk stated “This song was originally about mescaline, but now it’s about getting your clothes REALLY clean!”. I don’t know what to say about that, but it’s straight from the horses’ mouth. We’ll have to accept it.

Happy International Happiness Day! Enjoy!

Pop Goes The World
Men Without Hats

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass.
Name of the band is The Human Race.
Everybody tell me have you heard? Pop goes the world.

Jenny played keyboard, Johnny played drums,
Called Little Baby and a big Bonhomme
Everybody tell me have you heard? Pop Goes The World.

It goes something like this: (p p p pop)

Johnny and Jenny had a crazy dream,
See their pictures in a magazine.
Every little boy needs a girl.
Pop Goes The World.

Jenny and Johnny getting smart (it seems)
Made more money on a movie screen.
Every little nest needs a bird.
Pop Goes The World.

One two three and four is five,
Everybody here is a friend of mine.
Whatever happened to the Duke of Earl?
Pop Goes The World.

Six seven eight and nine is ten,
Send Al Gunn to see the doctor (Ben)
Say what planet are we on? The third!
Pop Goes The World.

And Every time I wonder where the world went wrong,
End up lying on my face going ringy dingy ding dong

And every time I wonder if the world is right,
End up in some disco dancing all night & day.

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass,
Name of the band is The Human Race.
Everybody tell me have you heard? Pop Goes The World.

Johnny played guitar, Jenny played bass,
Ain’t nobody couldn’t take their place.
Everybody tell me have you heard? Pop Goes The World…
