Rock Lyrics Vol. 31 – She Sells Sanctuary

CultShe Sells Sanctuary

She Sells Sanctuary is a rock song by the British band The Cult, released in 1985 as the first single from their second album Love. The song is one of the band’s most popular and recognizable songs, and has been covered by many artists.

A rock classic, it was recorded at Olympic studios in Barnes and produced by Steve Brown, who gave it a polished and radio-friendly sound.

The song was written by the band’s singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, who were inspired by a visit to a Native American reservation in Canada. Astbury later said that the song was about “the idea of finding a place where you belong, where you feel safe and loved”. The song’s title was taken from a sign that Astbury saw on a building in London, which advertised a women’s shelter.

The song features a distinctive guitar riff by Duffy, who used a flanger pedal to create a swirling sound. The song also has a prominent drum beat by Nigel Preston, who was fired from the band shortly after recording the song due to his drug problems.

The song was a hit in the UK, reaching number 15 on the singles chart. It also charted in other countries, such as Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand. The song received positive reviews from critics, who praised its catchy melody and energetic performance. The song has been included in several lists of the best rock songs of all time, such as Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s.

She Sells Sanctuary has been used in various media, such as movies, TV shows, video games and commercials. Some of the notable examples are Layer Cake, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Nissan Altima. The song has also influenced other musicians, such as U2, Oasis and Metallica.

This is for sure one of the songs that people turn the volume up load as soon as it starts playing. Enjoy! (lyrics below)

She Sells Sanctuary

Oh, the heads that turn | Make my back burnAnd those heads that turn | Make my back, make my back burn
The sparkle in your eyes | Keeps me aliveAnd the sparkle in your eyes | Keeps me alive, keeps me alive
The world | And the world turns aroundThe world and the world, yeah | The world drags me down
Oh, the heads that turn | Make my back burnAnd those heads that turn | Make my back, make my back burn, yeah
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah | Yeah-yeah
The fire in your eyes keeps me alive | And the fire in your eyes keeps me aliveI’m sure in her you’ll find sanctuary | I’m sure in her you’ll find sanctuary
And the world, the world turns around | And the world and the world, the world drags me downAnd the world and the world and the world, the world turns aroundAnd the world and the world and the world and the worldAnd the world drags me down | Ah, hey yeah, hey yeahAnd the world (hey yeah, hey), and the world turns around (hey yeah, hey)And the world, and the world (hey yeah, hey) | Yeah, the world drags me down (hey yeah, hey)And the world (hey yeah, hey) | Yeah, the world turns around (hey yeah, hey)And the world, and the world (hey yeah, hey), the world drags me down (hey yeah, hey)
