You Never Know What Will Happen
This classic Monday song is reported to have been written in 20 minutes by John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas after being prodded by fellow band-mate Denny Doherty to come up with some new material. Denny, along with the other band-mates Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips, didn’t particularly like the song; however, they recorded the tune and it was included in their 1966 album If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears. Much to their surprise (and chagrin, because they had to keep performing it) the song rocketed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also as a complete surprise to them, they won a Grammy Award for Monday Monday in March 1967 for the category Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
A Lot Of Moving Parts
Because the band The Mamas & The Papas is comprised of strictly vocalists, they require backup musicians. In this case, they used Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Joe Osborn on bass, Hal Blaine was on drums and P.F. Sloan played guitar. Sloan was only 20 years old at the time! The album was released on Dunhill Records with Lou Adler as the Producer along with Engineer Bones Howe.
Monday Monday – The Mamas & The Papas
Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday morning, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh, Monday morning, Monday morning couldn’t guarantee
That Monday evening, you would still be here with me
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day
Monday, Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh, Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be
Oh, Monday, Monday, how could you leave and not take me?
Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying all of the time
Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday morning, it was all I hoped it would be
But Monday morning, Monday morning couldn’t guarantee
That Monday evening, you would still be here with me
Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying all of the time
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day
Monday, Monday, it just turns out that way
Oh, Monday, Monday, won’t go away
Monday, Monday, it’s here to stay
Oh Monday, Monday
Oh Monday, Monday
